Canonical URLs, what in the world does that mean?! Is it a big deal? The answer is a resounding YES! Canonicalization, even larger word, is the process of picking the best url or several choices, usually in the case of home pages. Here's a few examples:
These all may take you to the same place, but they are all different urls, confused yet? But when someone clicks on one of your links do you know if they are going to A vs B? The main problem that happens here is that Google doesn't know which link should get the most traffic, therefore your popularity is split through two or more pages, driving your ranking down. There are a few fixes to this problem, one being that you make sure that every link goes to whichever version of the url that you want to get the most attention. Secondly, url redirects. By adding a redirect you let Google know which url you prefer to be canonical. Who's ready to start coding? That's what I thought!
